“For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” - Galatians 5:1
As people who follow Jesus Christ, we are immensely grateful for his grace in our lives. We believe that we are sinners who have been made right with God through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. We welcome all people to receive this grace from God.
Our Vision is For you…
To KNOW Jesus Christ and His care for you
To GROW in His love through worship, prayer, and small groups
To GO and to share His love with others
Sharing God’s care…
That all may know Jesus
as their Lord, Savior, and Friend
A brief history
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded on November 28, 1948. In 1950 the first building was built with the larger portion of the building added on in 1959. There have been several renovations and improvements made throughout the years looking towards a commitment to education, worship, mission, and outreach. A remodeled social hall, bride’s room, Sunday school rooms, ADA restrooms, and a welcoming community room, have fostered a feeling of warmth and welcome to all who come.
For over sixty years, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has sought to serve God in this place. Much has changed from those post-war years when Zion got its start. Community life, family life, technology and communication are quite different. Church life has changed, too. But at the core, the same gospel message calls and holds Zion together. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
Pastor Bob Kenyon
Call me “Pastor Bob” or “Bob”. I was born in Spokane, Washington, on August 16, 1952, and spent my early years in South Seattle (Des Moines) before moving to Olympia for high school. I began college at Pacific Lutheran University, but completed my degree in Religious Studies and Communications at Whitworth College. In 1974, I entered Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated in 1978 after interning at St. Olaf Lutheran in Fort Dodge, Iowa. That same year, we immigrated to Canada to begin a new chapter in ministry.
We were called to start a new congregation in the fast-growing town of Airdrie, Alberta, where I began by ringing 2,500 doorbells and holding services in a rented space beside the town curling rink. After three and a half years, the church was thriving. From there, I served congregations in Nelson and Fort St. John, BC—where we ministered in a unique community of seniors, building a connected care home, senior housing, and worship space that became home to 400 worshippers each Sunday.
After returning to the U.S., I served in Kendrick and Julietta, Idaho, and later in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where we built strong ecumenical partnerships and started a food bank that still operates today. In 2005, I accepted a call to Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville, WA. Over the years, I also served congregations in Connell and Sprague, linking them in shared ministry. I officially retired in 2020, but continued to serve at Messiah Lutheran in Spokane, where I had been preaching regularly for over three years as the congregation prepared to close.
Now, I am honored to walk alongside you in this next season. With over 46 years of pastoral experience, I bring a deep commitment to Word and Sacrament ministry, relationship-building, and community outreach. I hold office hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am to noon, and I look forward to visiting and getting to know each of you personally.
